Catching waves on kayaks has been a part of the scene in Kailua for many years. The wave sizes can range from small beginner brakes at Flat Island, to monster munchers in between the Mokulua Islands. The most important thing to remember, no matter what size wave you are on, is to plan on flipping! Wipe-outs on waves are part of the fun. Especially in tandem surfing, watching the inevitable, head over heals crash, can be to the enjoyment of beach goers and watermen alike. Mainland kayakers and inexperienced boaters may not be used to Hawaii's world class waves and should consult with local experts before going out.
